Retrofitting for Urban Biodiversity

Transforming Existing Green Spaces into Thriving Urban Ecosystems

Urban landscapes are often dominated by ornamental plants that offer limited ecological value. Retrofitting for Urban Biodiversity is the process of enhancing existing parks, gardens, traffic islands, and roadside plantations by integrating native vegetation, pollinator habitats, and nature-based features—without redesigning entire spaces. It is a cost-effective, scalable, and climate-smart way to rejuvenate city green spaces.

Why Retrofitting Matters

  • Boosts Local Wildlife: Native plants support butterflies, bees, birds, and beneficial insects.
  • Enhances Climate Resilience: Biodiverse landscapes need less water and fewer chemical inputs.
  • Improves Public Experience: Shade, seasonal blooms, and richer natural elements enhance citizen wellbeing.
  • Supports Urban Biodiversity Goals: Strengthens alignment with city, national, and global biodiversity frameworks.

What Retrofitting Involves

1. Assess

We evaluate:

  • Native–exotic plant balance
  • Pollinator & bird presence
  • Soil health and irrigation practices
  • Opportunities to add biodiversity features

2. Enhance

Targeted interventions include:

  • Introducing native flowering shrubs and host plants
  • Creating pollinator strips, climber trellises, and bird-friendly features
  • Replacing invasive/low-value ornamentals
  • Soil and microhabitat improvements

3. Sustain

We strengthen long-term outcomes through:

  • Biodiversity-friendly maintenance practices
  • Monitoring indicators (flowering, survival, pollinator activity)
  • Training for garden and maintenance staff

Who will benefit

This service is ideal for any organisation responsible for managing green spaces, including:

  • Municipal Corporations & Urban Local Bodies (public parks, gardens, medians)
  • Government Agencies managing open spaces or institutional campuses
  • Corporate Offices, IT Parks & SEZs with thematic or decorative gardens
  • Real Estate Developers & Facility Management Firms maintaining landscaped areas
  • Housing Societies & Gated Communities seeking sustainable greenery
  • Hospitals, Educational Institutes & Tourism Facilities that maintain gardens
  • CSR teams interested in climate, biodiversity, and community-focused initiatives

Retrofitting upgrades existing greenery into functioning habitats that support biodiversity, improve resilience, and deliver a better experience for visitors and residents.

Case Study

Workshop on Retrofitting Urban Green Spaces for Biodiversity

Client: WRI India
Partner: Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai
Date: 8 October
Knowledge Partner: Ladybird Environmental Consulting LLP

WRI collaborated with Ladybird to deliver a focused capacity-building workshop for the Mumbai Garden Department on integrating biodiversity principles into existing parks, gardens, traffic islands, and roadside plantations. The workshop introduced a practical "retrofitting" approach—enhancing current plantations rather than redesigning entire landscapes.

Workshop Highlights

  • Biodiversity Lens Orientation: Participants learned why native plants are essential for supporting pollinators, birds, and soil health, and how they reduce long-term maintenance efforts.
  • Upgrading Existing Tools: Ladybird introduced a Biodiversity Addendum to strengthen BMC’s existing greening templates with fields on native–exotic ratio, pollinator activity, and retrofit opportunities.
  • Hands-on Retrofitting Audit: Using real BMC site photos, participants identified which elements to retain, replace, or add, generating practical, low-cost improvements.
  • Maintenance Solutions: Teams analysed common challenges and developed biodiversity-friendly responses such as reducing chemical inputs and improving soil practices.

Key Outcomes

  • Clear understanding of how to apply a biodiversity approach to everyday horticultural work
  • Retrofits proposed for multiple BMC sites using native species
  • One pilot park identified for follow-up support
  • Foundation set for a Biodiversity Working Group within the Garden Department

This workshop demonstrated how targeted training and simple tools can help cities transform ornamental landscapes into thriving urban habitats.
