The Butterfly Express initiative reimagines police stations across Mumbai and Navi Mumbai as living green sanctuaries… spaces that nurture biodiversity while supporting the physical and emotional wellbeing of urban police personnel.
The project is spearheaded by DCB Bank Limited through its CSR programme, with Ladybird Environmental Consulting serving as the Knowledge Partner, and implementation led by iNaturewatch Foundation in collaboration with the Mumbai Police and Navi Mumbai Police. The initiative establishes butterfly gardens at ten police stations… five each in Mumbai and Navi Mumbai… particularly in areas with limited access to green spaces.
Each location is planted with over 300 butterfly friendly species, transforming concrete dominated environments into thriving habitats. These green interventions enhance air quality, reduce stress, and foster a deeper connection between police personnel and the communities they serve. Through butterfly awareness programmes, educational outreach, and air quality monitoring, the initiative aims to increase butterfly species diversity by 15 percent while reducing pollution levels by 20 to 30 percent.
More than a greening effort, Butterfly Patrol is about restoration… of ecosystems and of human wellbeing. Aligned with key Sustainable Development Goals, it represents a step toward healthier cities and more resilient urban landscapes.
Based on feasibility surveys, the selected police stations are:

November saw steady progress under the Butterfly Express/Patrol initiative with DCB Bank and the Navi Mumbai Police. We completed major landscaping and pathway development at the Sanpada and Nhava Sheva Police Station Butterfly Gardens, including a new pond, winding paths, and a butterfly feeder.
Butterfly Awareness Sessions were conducted across multiple police stations, engaging personnel from Sanpada, Vashi APMC, Khandeswar, Turbhe, Rabale MIDC, Nhava Sheva, and Uran. Sessions covered butterfly ecology, host plants, and habitat conservation. Plantation assessments were also carried out to track plant health and growth.
On 22 November, 61 volunteers from DCB Bank supported garden enhancement work at Vashi and Sanpada by installing plant signages, fencing plants, and creating brick lining.

In October 2025, the Butterfly Patrol Project by iNaturewatch Foundation, in collaboration with DCB Bank and Navi Mumbai Police, expanded its green footprint with the creation of five new Butterfly Gardens at Panvel ACP Office, Panvel City, Khandeshwar, Uran, and Nhava Sheva Police Stations. Each garden features a vibrant mix of nectar and host plants designed to support butterflies through every stage of their life cycle. Enthusiastic police staff actively participated in the plantation drives, turning their premises into mini havens for pollinators. Additionally, a compensatory plantation drive at Sanpada Police Station with 19 DCB Bank volunteers added 60 butterfly-attracting saplings. With ten gardens now established, these spaces are already buzzing with life — a beautiful reminder that when we create habitats for nature, nature immediately responds.

In September 2025, maintenance activities were carried out across five Butterfly Gardens — Sanpada, Turbhe, Rabale MIDC, Vashi, and Vashi APMC Police Stations. The work included de-weeding, pruning, and soil loosening to promote healthy plant growth. The gardens, especially at Sanpada and Turbhe, received a fresh makeover and are now buzzing with butterflies once again.

In the month of August, we began implementing plans for five butterfly gardens across Navi Mumbai. Our work included plantation activities, ordering plants and pots, and carrying out ground preparation and digging at the Vashi and Sanpada Police Stations. In the month of August, we began implementing plans for five butterfly gardens across Navi Mumbai. Our work included plantation activities, ordering plants and pots, and carrying out ground preparation and digging at the Vashi and Sanpada Police Stations. For the other three stations—Vashi APMC, Turbhe MIDC, and Rabale MIDC—we created potted gardens to suit the available space. With these efforts, we successfully completed the development of butterfly gardens at all five police stations.

In July, we teamed up with Mr. Vaje, Police Hawaldar from the Belapur Commissioner’s Office, to explore the possibility of setting up butterfly gardens at police stations in Navi Mumbai. We visited seven stations to review their existing gardens and surrounding space. After looking at key factors like open area and sunlight, we shortlisted five stations where butterfly gardens can thrive.
