This was the second site in Mumbai where 7000 saplings were planted in first (2015) year and thereafter 1000 saplings in second (2016) year. The challenge in this place was to fit in the butterfly plants without disturbing the conventional look of the well pruned garden. We created second line of nectar and host plants all along the edges of 8 plots of the garden (see before and after images). We conduct assessment of the site twice a year for health of plants and increase in butterfly sightings. We have also engaged local nature enthusiasts who volunteered with us during re-plantation activities.
UPDATES: Before the start of the project there were no butterfly sighted in the garden but now (March 2017) we recorded around 21 butterfly of 8 different species. The site is suffering water issues which affected the survival rate of the plantation hence 65% (March 2017) of the plants are surviving. We have also conducted butterfly awareness programmes for three local schools such as Navghar Marathi Municipal School, VPM School, Hanuman Nagar BMC Primary School and so far 186 students have been exposed to our programmes.
